Google Pixel 9 Will Finally Get Ultrasonic Fingerprint Sensor

Google aims to implement an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner in its upcoming Pixel 9 series.

Google has managed to resolve some of the issues its Pixel devices face, over time. Now, the upcoming Google Pixel 9 series aims to tackle yet another persistent problem, which is the somewhat slow and occasionally unreliable under-display fingerprint sensor. Google aims to implement an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner in its upcoming Pixel 9 series, Android Authority has reported, citing a source familiar with the development. The Pixel lineup currently employs optical fingerprint sensors.

Google Pixel phones have faced several recurring issues across generations and some notable problems include outdated camera sensors, very slow charging speeds, lack of ultra-wide camera and inconsistent bezel sizes.

The Qualcomm 3D Sonic Gen 2 (QFS4008) fingerprint sensor, also found in the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra (read our full review of the Galaxy S24 Ultra here), will be integrated into all Google Pixel 9 models. However, the Pixel Fold will retain the fingerprint sensor in the power button.

This year's iteration of Made by Google event is scheduled for August 13, 2024, at 10:00 AM PT or 10:30 PM IST. The event, to be hosted at Googleplex in Mountain View, California, will be available for streaming on the Google Store page and Google’s YouTube channel.

Pixel 9 Getting New Pink Colour

Fresh leaks of the much-anticipated Google Pixel 9 have surfaced online and an unexpected source in Algeria has provided hands-on video of what appears to be a functional Pixel 9 unit, in a pretty pink colour. The leaked footage  showcase the Pixel 9 in a stunning new colour variant, purportedly named "Peony" after the vibrant flower. This soft pink hue adds a fresh option to Google's typically understated colour palette used in Pixel phones.

Google Pixel 9 Specs And Features (Expected)

Notably, the leaked Pixel 9 boasts 256GB of storage, suggesting it may be a fully operational unit rather than a mere prototype. This revelation has also fuelled speculation about enhanced hardware offerings in the upcoming Pixel 9 lineup. Previous rumours have hinted at significant upgrades for the base Pixel 9 model, including a boost to 12GB of RAM -- a substantial improvement over the 8GB found in earlier iterations. This increase in memory could dramatically enhance multitasking capabilities and overall performance.

At the heart of the Pixel 9 series will be Google's next-generation proprietary Tensor G4 chipset. The G4 is expected to deliver improved AI capabilities, faster performance, and enhanced energy efficiency compared to its predecessors. As anticipation builds, the source of these leaks, Hani Mohamed Bioud, has promised to reveal more details soon.

Google has officially announced that the Pixel 9 series and Pixel Watch 3 will be unveiled on August 13, earlier than their traditional October release date. This year's event will take place at Google's headquarters in Mountain View, California, marking a departure from the usual New York City venue. Typically, Google hosts its annual Pixel launch event in October, but this year, the company has taken a turn and announced a surprise Pixel event scheduled for August 13, almost two months ahead of the usual timeline.
