Musk Says 'Canada Is Not A Real Country', Then Deletes Tweet. Here's The Story Behind The Post

Born in Pretoria, South Africa, Musk obtained Canadian citizenship through his mother, Maye Musk, who was born in Saskatchewan.

Elon Musk has sparked fresh controversy by declaring that Canada is "not a real country" after a petition calling for the revocation of his Canadian citizenship gained significant traction. The online campaign, launched by British Columbia resident Qualia Reed and backed by New Democratic Party (NDP) MP Charlie Angus, has attracted more than 250,000 signatures so far.

The petition argues that Musk’s actions conflict with Canada’s national interests, alleging that he has used his influence to interfere in elections and supports foreign governments that threaten the country’s sovereignty. "We, the undersigned, citizens of Canada, call upon the Prime Minister to revoke Elon Musk's dual citizenship status, and revoke his Canadian passport effective immediately," the petition states.

In response, Musk made his stance clear late Monday, dismissing the entire situation by stating, "Canada is not a real country."

The Petition, Its Political Implications

The petition, which remains open until June 20, is expected to be presented in the House of Commons once it closes. However, it carries little legal weight. Under Canadian law, citizenship can typically only be revoked in cases involving fraud, misrepresentation, or concealment of relevant information during the application process. A petition alone does not hold the power to strip citizenship.

Angus, who is sponsoring the petition, has been a vocal critic of Musk and his influence. While former US President Donald Trump has previously suggested incorporating Canada as America’s 51st state, concerns over Musk’s alignment with political figures like Trump have added fuel to the debate.

Musk’s Canadian Ties

Born in Pretoria, South Africa, Musk obtained Canadian citizenship through his mother, Maye Musk, who was born in Saskatchewan. He later moved to the United States on a student visa, eventually becoming a US citizen a decade later.

Despite the significant number of signatures on the petition, it is unlikely to result in any real consequences for Musk’s citizenship. Instead, the campaign appears to be a symbolic move reflecting broader frustrations over his influence and political leanings.

With the petition set to close in June, it remains to be seen how Canadian lawmakers will respond, but for now, Musk’s blunt remark about the country has only intensified the debate.
