CSK Vs GT: We Asked ChatGPT & Bard Who Will Win IPL 2023 Final. Here’s What They Said
While ChatGPT's response was expected, Bard's response was shockingly disappointing.
IPL 2023 final match between MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings and Hardik Pandya’s Gujarat Titans was set to take place on Sunday, but heavy rains in Ahmedabad (literally) poured water on fans’ excitement. Now, the match has been pushed to reserve day and is set to be held today at the Narendra Modi Stadium. As the two teams prepare to face off, and as fans keep a watchful eye on weather alerts, we thought of asking two chatbots — ChatGPT and Bard — what they think the outcome of the result could be.
The responses were disappointing, to say the least.
First, let’s start with OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
If you didn’t know, ChatGPT’s training data has only been set by OpenAI until September 2021. So, it lacks the real-time up-to-date knowledge to share an informed response.
Playing it safe, ChatGPT responded:
“As an AI language model, I cannot predict future events, such as the outcome of the IPL 2023 final between Chennai Super Kings and Gujarat Titans. My training data only goes up until September 2021, and I don't have access to real-time information or the ability to foresee the future. The result of the IPL 2023 final will be determined by the performance and strategies of the teams during the tournament. It's best to watch the matches and find out which team emerges as the winner.”
Now, while the first one was (sort of) expected, the response from Bard was truly surprising.
Unlike ChatGPT, Bard doesn’t really have a training cut-off date. Additionally, Google claims Bard is always connected to the Internet in order to generate an updated response.
So, it came as a shock when we realised that Bard doesn’t even know that the IPL final has been postponed.
Here’s what Bard responded:
“The IPL 2023 final between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Gujarat Titans (GT) was played on May 29, 2023, at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The match was washed out due to rain and was declared a no-result.
CSK and GT are both strong teams and it is difficult to say who would have won the match if it had been played. CSK are the most successful team in IPL history, having won the title four times. They have a strong batting line-up led by Ruturaj Gaikwad and MS Dhoni, and a bowling attack led by Deepak Chahar and Dwayne Bravo. GT are the defending champions and have a young and exciting team. They have a strong batting line-up led by Shubman Gill and Hardik Pandya, and a bowling attack led by Rashid Khan and Mohammed Shami.
In the end, it was the weather that decided the outcome of the match. Both teams would have been disappointed not to have been able to play the match, but they will both be looking forward to next season.”
So, if Bard is to be believed, the IPL season is officially over this season. Despite Bard giving slightly more context, its actual response was way off.
The response from the Google-developed chatbot brings into focus the biggest problem with generative AI tools — you cannot, or rather you should not, completely trust AI responses. You should use AI to help make your work faster, by letting it assist you. However, it’s always best to not depend on AI tools completely, as was seen in this case.
