The IMD predicted that heavy rain would likely occur at isolated places over Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Erode, Dindigul, Theni, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi and Kanyakumari districts.

In certain areas of Tamil Nadu, such as Trichy and Madurai, heavy rainfall was observed on Saturday (May 11) offering relief from the intense summer heat. This precipitation coincided with forecast from the Regional Meteorological Department (RMC) predicting heavy rainfall across various districts of Tamil Nadu for the next five days.

Earlier, the IMD predicted that heavy rain would likely occur at isolated places over Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Erode, Dindigul, Theni, Virudhunagar, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi and Kanyakumari districts.

IMD also forecast the likelihood of light to moderate rainfall across several areas in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40-50 kmph at isolated spots.

On the reason for the rainfall, the IMD said, "A Trough/Wind Discontinuity runs from Marathwada to Comorin area across Interior Karnataka and Kerala at 0.9 km above mean sea level. Yesterday’s cyclonic circulation over South Kerala & neighbourhood now lies over Southeast Arabian Sea off Kerala coast at 1.5 km above mean sea level."

In Chennai, IMD predicted partly cloudy skies with the possibility of light to moderate rainfall in certain areas. Maximum temperatures are expected to reach 35-36°C, while minimum temperatures are likely to hover around 28-29°C.

Meanwhile, as per the Tamil calendar, Agni Natchathiram (Kathiri Veyil) marks a phase of intense heatwaves, anticipated to persist until May 28 this year, commencing in the first week of May. Amid this time, individuals are cautioned against exposure to the midday sun at 12 PM. Additionally, this period is considered inauspicious for auspicious ceremonies like weddings due to purported associations with setbacks, financial challenges, and health issues.
