TN CM Stalin Writes To PM, CJI Over Appointment Of Judges & Setting Up Of SC Benches In States

TN CM Stalin also urged PM & CJI to declare Tamil as the official language of Madras and Madurai bench of High Court.

Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Thursday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Justice of India NV Ramana placing three demands including maintaining social diversity and social justice in the appointment of judges and establishing permanent regional benches of the Supreme Court. 

In a letter to PM Modi and CJI NV Ramana, TN CM Stalin said, “I request you to include the requirements to maintain social diversity and social justice in the appointment of High Court and Supreme Court Judges in the Memorandum of Procedure to appoint Judges and follow the same in true letter and spirit.”

“I urge you to take appropriate steps to establish Permanent Regional Benches of the Supreme Court in New Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata and Mumbai, apart from the Constitution Bench in New Delhi, so that the citizens in other parts of this vast country have equal access to the Supreme Court,” he said.

The Chief Minister also urged PM and CJI to declare Tamil as the official language of Madras and Madurai bench of High Court. The CM said, “I request your good selves to take appropriate steps to declare Tamil, the official language of the Government of Tamil Nadu, as the official language of the High Court of Judicature at Madras and its Bench at Madurai, in addition to English.”

Stalin also recalled that he placed the three demands during a function on April 23, 2022 in the presence of CJI and said that he is hopeful that the demand will be considered and implemented by them.
