TN CM Stalin Extends 'Best Wishes' To Perarivalan After SC Orders Release Of Rajiv Gandhi Assassination Convict

Perarivalan Release: Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin extended his "best wishes" to AG Perarivalan after the Supreme Court earlier in the day ordered the release of Rajiv Gandhi's assassination convict

New Delhi: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Wednesday extended his "best wishes" to AG Perarivalan after the Supreme Court earlier in the day ordered the release of Rajiv Gandhi's assassination convict. Perarivalan walked out of jail after he spent 31 years of a life sentence in former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.

"The release of AG Perarivalan is a welcoming one. He has lost over 30 years in jail and now he is to take a fresh breathe of freedom. I wish him well," news agency ANI quoted as saying by CM Stalin.

Taking his congratulatory wishes for Perarivalan's release to Twitter, Stalin wrote, "The DMK government has upheld the federal structure again with the landmark judgment and that the Governor has no power to interfere in the policy decision of the State Government."

He further hailed Supreme Court's landmark verdict. He tweeted, "The verdict of the case is not only based on human rights, but also in the history of state rights."

The apex court invoked its extraordinary powers to do justice under Article 142 of the Constitution and ordered the release of Perarivalan in Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, said The Hindu report.

On Wednesday, the verdict was pronounced by three-bench justice of the Supreme Court including Justices Nageswara Rao, BR Bavai and AS Bopanna. The Supreme Court bench also said, "There cannot be any inexplicable delay while exercising Article 161 and it can be subjected to judicial review. The Governor is a mere handle and we are not impressed to remand back the matter to him."
