Tamil Nadu Will Urge Centre To Form Tribunal To Resolve Markandeya River Dispute With Karnataka: Duraimurugan
Water Resources Minister S. Duraimurugan today said Karnataka's new dam project across Markandeya River will affect 870 hectares of agricultural land in Krishnagiri, Tamil Nadu.
Chennai: Water Resources Minister S Duraimurugan on Saturday said that the Tamil Nadu government will resume urging Union Government to form a tribunal to solve Markandeya river dispute with Karnataka.
He said, "Tamil Nadu government has been opposing the construction of dam project across Markandeya river in Karnataka and will continue to urge Centre to constitute an inter-state water disputes tribunal as per directives of Supreme Court to look into issue."
Releasing a statement, he said that this dam will affect 870 hectares of agricultural land getting irrigation in Krishnagiri district. The Supreme Court has already ordered the Karnataka dam issue to be resolved through an arbitral tribunal. Now the state government would take appropriate action to uphold the rights of farmers and the people of Tamil Nadu.
