Tamil Nadu: Union Home Minister Amit Shah Urges DMK Govt To Teach Medicine, Tech Education In Tamil

Several states have already started to offer medical and technical education in their native languages and Tamil Nadu should follow it, Shah said

Union Home Minister Amit Shah Saturday urged the Tamil Nadu government to introduce Tamil as a medium of instruction for medical and technical education courses. He further said that several states have already started to offer medical and technical education in their native languages and Tamil Nadu should follow it.

The Centre is aiming to make new amends in the education system through National Education Policy, 2020. One of the significant moves is introducing the mother tongue as the medium of instruction in schools until Class 5 or above. Already states like Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh have made it mandatory to introduce mother tongue teaching in schools.

Speaking at an event, Shah said, "Tamil is one of the oldest languages in the world. Today, I suggested to the Tamil Nadu govt the necessity of teaching engineering & medical courses in the Tamil language."

While promoting of introduction of mother tongue teaching in medical and technical education, he stated facts through data. the home minister said, "It was indicated that 1,350 seats in technical courses were allocated for Tamil-medium students but according to the latest available AICTE data only 85 students are studying in Tamil."

Amit Shah was in Chennai Saturday to attend the platinum jubilee celebrations of India Cements Ltd and he also met senior state BJP leaders.
