Tamil Nadu Tightens Monitoring Measures At Its Borders With Kerala Amid Covid Surge

Kerala has been recording close to 30,000 fresh Covid-19 cases for the past few days and the number of Covid-19 that the state logs has also been increasing. 

Chennai: After Kerala has recorded 29,836 covid-19 positive cases with a positivity rate of 19.67%, Tamil Nadu has tightened its monitoring measures at its borders with Kerala. 

According to a report from IANS, the Tamil Nadu health department and police department intensified the monitoring measures at Kaliyakkavilai near Nagercoil district and Walayar near Coimbatore district. Officials are verifying the negative RT-PCR test reports that are not older than 72 hours or Covid-19 vaccination certificates of those entering the state from Kerala. 

The report said that several people entering the state from Kerala were sent back at the Walayar check post after they failed to submit the certificates.

Recently, the Tamil Nadu government has issued guidelines mandating travellers from Kerala to submit negative RT-PCR certificates that are not older than 72 hours or fully vaccinated certificates to enter into the state, the report said. 

Quoting unidentified officials, the report said that more than 3000 people from Kerala had entered into the state on Sunday alone and of which, many were sent back as they failed to submit the mandatory certificates. After Onam holidays, a large number of people are returning from Kerala to Tamil Nadu and of which, many are not adhering to the guidelines, the officials added. 

Speaking to IANS, Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramanian said that they are protecting the people of Tamil Nadu by strengthening the monitoring measures as mandated by the health experts and stringent checking is going at all borders.
