Tamil Nadu: Thief Robs Retired Teacher's House In Thiruchendur, Leaves Apology Note With Vow To Return Stolen Items

The incident took place when the couple, Chithrai Selvin and his wife, were away visiting their son in Chennai on June 17.

In an unexpected turn of events, a thief burgled the residence of retired teachers in Megnanapuram of Thiruchendur district and left behind an apology note for his act. The incident took place when the couple, Chithrai Selvin and his wife, were away visiting their son in Chennai on June 17.

The couple had entrusted their home on Sathankulam Road in Thiruchendur to a domestic helper named Selvi to regularly clean the house during their absence. Like the regular days, on June 26, Selvi visited the house to clean it and suddenly discovered the main door open. She immediately found certain things missing and alerted Chithirai Selvin who in turn gave a complaint to the police, according to a report on India Today.

Based on preliminary inquiry, the police confirmed that Rs 60,000 in cash, two pairs of gold earrings, and silver anklets were missing.

However, the police also found an apology letter handwritten by the burglar. In the letter, the thief expressed deep remorse and promised to return the stolen items within a month, reported Times of India.

"Forgive me. I will return this in a month. I am doing this if someone in my house is not well," the letter read, according to a report on India Today.

The Megnanapuram police have registered a case and initiated a thorough investigation into the incident. This incident mirrors a similar occurrence in Kerala last year, where a thief returned the proceeds from a stolen gold necklace along with an apology letter, after stealing it from a child near Palakkad.

The thief after returning the ornaments and kept a plea of guilt, begging not to be arrested. "Please do not arrest me. Please forgive me. I am sorry," he stated in the letter, according to NDTV.
