Tamil Nadu Govt School Teachers' Protest Seeking Equal Pay Enters 6th Day In Chennai

In Tamil Nadu, government teachers have been staging protests demanding equal pay while temporary teachers have been demanding permanent jobs.

Tamil Nadu government school teachers and aspirants staged a protest for the sixth consecutive day at the Directorate of Public Instruction campus on Tuesday. The teachers and aspirants stage a protest with multiple demands including equal compensation for equal work and to ensure job security. The protest continued on Tuesday even as the school reopened after the quarterly exams, 

According to ANI, "A large number of teachers continued to protest on the fifth day today, inside the Directorate of Public Instruction (DPI) campus."

Government teachers demanded equal pay, temporary teachers demanded permanent jobs and TET 2013 qualified aspirants demanded government jobs.

The agitators held placards and raised slogans demanding to fulfill their request.

The Secondary Grade Seniority Teachers' Association (SSTA) protested for equal pay for equal work, another group of temporarily appointed teachers demanded permanent positions and qualified TET 2013 candidates demanded appointment and cancellation of the Government Order 149 (G.O) passed by the previous AIADMK government for these candidates to pass another competitive exam to verify their eligibility.

For more than ten years, secondary-grade teachers (SGTs) have pushed for equal compensation for all teachers hired before and after May 31, 2009, and for there to be no inequality in the salary structure. According to sources, teachers hired on or after June 1, 2009, receive pay that is Rs. 3,000 less than teachers hired up until May 31, 2009.

Till now, around 130 teachers have been admitted to government hospitals due to poor health after taking part in the indefinite protest organised by the association, as reported by Indian Express.
