Toilets For Women Allotted In Nilgiris Court Complex After Supreme Court Hearing

The vacation bench recorded a detailed report by the Registrar General of Madras High Court on the matter.

The Women Lawyers Association of Nilgiris (WLAN ) informed Supreme Court that the grievance about the lack of women's toilet in Ooty Court has been addressed. The Association informed the court that two rooms and a toilet have been exclusively allotted to women.

According to a report on Bar and Bench, the case by WLAN alleging lack of toilets for women in the new court complex came up for hearing before a bench of Justices Aniruddha Bose and Rajesh Bindal on Monday. The vacation bench recorded a detailed report by Registrar General of Madras High Court.

Later, the court posted the plea for a hearing in July. The court said that the petitioners do not have any grievances for now so the matter can be posted before the appropriate bench in the first week of July.

On Friday, Supreme Court directed the registry of Madras HC to submit a detailed report on the efforts taken to address the issue of lack of toilets for women lawyers in Nilgiris Court Complex.

The Court also said that a previous report submitted by the registrar general did not mention the details of restroom facilities for women lawyers in the newly-built court complex. The Court also reportedly said that the report did not mention if there was any shrinkage of such facilities which were available earlier.

On June 7, National Commission for Women chairperson Rekha Sharma also wrote to the Registrar General of Madras High Court seeking measures to address the lack of toilet facilities for women lawyers in the court complex in Ooty. She told the Registrar General of Madras HC to immediately intervene in the matter to make sure that the issue was addressed. The Commission also gave three days to assess and act on the matter.
