Subramaniaswami Temple Devotees Demand To Clean Contaminated Saravana Poigai Pond

Devotees who visit the temple to offer prayers demand that the pond be cleaned.

Devotees of Subramaniaswami temple demand to clean the contaminated Saravana Poigai pond. The temple has hundreds of devotees every day and the contamination has also reportedly gotten worse. The devotees tonsure the head in Saravana Poigai. The people also wash their clothes in the pond even though they had toilet facilities near the temple.

According to ANI, "Polythene bags and chips packets seen floating on Saravana Poigai pond adjacent to Subramaniaswami Temple; people seen washing clothes on the banks of the pond."

As a result, the tank has a mass of algae. Devotees who visit the temple to offer prayers demand that the pond be cleaned.

Saravana Poigai gets water from two sources including rainwater and the Vaigai river. The water from the river reportedly flows through Thenkaal tank, Chettiyakulam tank and then flows to Lakshmi Theertham. It then reaches Saravana Pogai, as per a report on The Hindu.

In 2016, thousands of dead fish were found dead on Saravana Poigai tank in Tirupparankundram in Madurai. The temple workers realized that foul smell emanated from the tank.

The temple authorities then trusted workers to remove the fish. Initially, the locals suspected that the miscreants might have poisoned the water. They suspected that the crime must have taken place since the temple's tank is where the annual fishing rights were purchased for Rs 47,000.
