Saravana Poigai gets water from two sources including rainwater and the Vaigai river. The water from the river reportedly flows through Thenkaal tank, Chettiyakulam tank and then flows to Lakshmi Theertham. It then reaches Saravana Pogai, as per a report on The Hindu.
In 2016, thousands of dead fish were found dead on Saravana Poigai tank in Tirupparankundram in Madurai. The temple workers realized that foul smell emanated from the tank.
The temple authorities then trusted workers to remove the fish. Initially, the locals suspected that the miscreants might have poisoned the water. They suspected that the crime must have taken place since the temple's tank is where the annual fishing rights were purchased for Rs 47,000.
