Six Hindu Munnani Workers Arrested For Vandalising Eatery Named After 'Thanthai' Periyar In Coimbatore

The Hindu Munnani members allegedly asked him how an eatery can be opened in the name of Periyar in a "Hindu fortress" (Coimbatore).

Chennai: Six Hindu Munnani workers were arrested on Wednesday after they vandalised an eatery "Thanthai Periyar" named after EV Ramasamy Periyar, the father of Dravidian movement. On Tuesday, The vandalism took place at the eatery which was set to open the next day in Coimbatore. 

According to a report on IANS, Prabhakaran, the owner of the eatery, was running a gas agency and a chicken meat stall in Coimbatore. 

Against this backdrop, Hindu Munnani workers approached Prabhakaran and said that he cannot use the name of Periyar in Karamadai. However, he did not pay heed and decided to open the eatery on Wednesday.

Talking to media persons, Prabhakaran said that the attackers were from Kannampalayam and they attacked the eatery since they were upset with the name of the eatery.

The Hindu Munnani members allegedly asked him how an eatery can be opened in the name of Periyar in a "Hindu fortress" (Coimbatore). They also allegedly asked him the reason for planning to run the eatery with the name of Periyar. 

This led to an altercation between the eatery workers and Hindu Munnani members. Following this, the members started vandalising the restaurant and they also reportedly used abusive language and beat Arun who was working at the eatery until he suffered injuries. The members then fled the scene, as per a report on The News Minute. 

Currently, Arun is receiving treatment at a private hospital in the district.

Later, he gave a complaint to the police. In the complaint, Prabhakaran said that the eatery was set to be opened on Wednesday but the members vandalised the premises and destroyed the board of the eatery on Tuesday. Based on the complaint, the police registered a case under sections of IPC including rioting, criminal trespass, obscene language, and the Tamil Nadu Open Places (Prevention of Disfigurement) Act.
