School Student Run Over By Speeding Water Tanker In Chennai
Chennai Road Accident: Leora Sri was travelling to school along with her mother at the time of the accident.
A 10-year-old girl riding a pillion with her mother on a two-wheeler to her school was run over by a speeding water tanker after she accidentally fell from the vehicle at Kovilambakkam in Chennai on Monday. The driver of the truck who immediately fled from the scene was later arrested by the police. The girl identified as Leora Sri was residing with her mother Keerthi in Kovilambakkam while her father was working in Germany.
On Monday, Leora Sri was travelling to school along with her mother who is also a teacher at the same from Nanmangalam to Madipakkam at 8.45 AM. While they were crossing a road at Kovilambakkam, Keerthi lost control of the vehicle reportedly due to the bumpy road and the duo fell on the road. During the same time, a tanker lorry that was approaching towards them ran over Leora, said a report in The Hindu.
Subsequently, the driver reportedly parked the vehicle and escaped from the spot. However, the police narrowed down and arrested him on Monday. The arrested driver was identified as David Rajan (28).
Talking to reporters, Keethi said that she lost the balance of the two-wheeler since the water tanker brushed against the vehicle. As a result, she said that she lost the balance of the vehicle and fell to the ground.
“I fell down and I carried my daughter to the hospital myself,” the mother said, as per a report on Indian Express. She also alleged that the motorists did not come to help her.
Leora was declared dead on arrival at the hospital and later her body was sent for autopsy.
Pallikaranai Traffic Investigation Police registered a case and launched a probe into the accident. Further investigations are on.
