Kaanum Pongal: Chennai Police Announces Traffic Diversion To Handle Crowd, Avoid Untoward Incidents

On the last day of Pongal, the police expect families to travel to places of the public congregation to celebrate the day. 

Chennai: On the occasion of 'Kaanum Pongal', the fourth day of the Pongal festivities, the police have beefed up the security across Chennai anticipating a huge crowd.  Around 15,000 police personnel have been deployed to maintain the law and order situation in the state on 'Kaanum Pongal' day. 

On the last day of Pongal, the police expect families to travel to places of the public congregation to celebrate the day. 

Rajat Chaturvedi, Deputy Commissioner of Chennai Mylapore said, "We are here to facilitate the crowd to avoid untoward incidents. Barricades have been placed to avoid drowning incidents on beaches."

"I have also directed police personnel to speak politely to the public. Sensitive training is also being given to police personnel,” he said, as per ANI. 

The Chennai Traffic Police also announced traffic diversions on many roads to avoid traffic congression. 

According to a release from Chennai police,

> As far as possible normal traffic will be allowed on Kamarajar Salai

> When a large number of public gather at Labour Statue, the vehicles from north will be diverted at Parrys comer towards Muthusamy Point - Wallajah Point - Anna Salai - Pallavan Point- Periyar Statue-Anna Statue - Wellington Point - Spencer Junction - Pattulas road-Tower Clock G.R.H.Point Dr R.K. Salai to reach their destination.

> The vehicles from Adyar will be diverted at Kannagi Statue towards Bharathi Salai, Bells road. Wallajah road to reach their destination Bharathi Salai stretch will be made one way with entry from Kannagi Statue and No entry from Wallajah Road X Bells road Junction.

> Victoria Hostel Road will be made one way with 'Entry" from Wallajah salai Jn and 'No Entry from Bharathi Salai Jn.

> Whenever a diversion is made functional. The information of the same will be made available via RoadEase app on Google map within 10 minutes. Motorists are requested to keep a track of the diversion through Google map.
