Justice M Duraiswamy Appointed As Acting Chief Justice Of Madras High Court

The appointment of Justice Duraiswamy comes after the sitting Chief Justice of Madras High Court Munishwar Nath Bhandari is set to retire on September 12.

Chennai: As the sitting Chief Justice of Madras High Court Munishwar Nath Bhandari is set to retire on September 12, the senior most judge–Justice M Duraiswamy–was appointed as the Acting Chief Justice of Madras HC. The official communication in this regard was made by the President of India Droupadi Murmu through a gazette notification on Monday. 

According to a press communique, in the exercise of the power conferred by Article 223 of the Constitution, the President appointed Justice M Duraiswamy, the senior-most judge of the Madras High Court, to perform the duties of the office of the Chief Justice, with effect from September 13 consequent upon the superannuation of Justice Munishwar Nath Bhandari, Chief Justice, Madras High Court.

Justice M Duraiswamy completed his law degree at Madras Law College and got enrolled as an advocate in the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on January 21, 1987. He also worked as a junior under Justice AS Venkatachalamoorthy, former Chief Justice of Chhattisgarh High Court.

Later, he started practicing as an advocate in Madras High Court. In 1997, he was appointed as Central government standing counsel till 2000. He was then elevated as an Additional Judge of Madras HC in 2009. 

In 2011, Duraiswamy was appointed as the Judge of the High Court of Madras.

Meanwhile, Justice Munishwar Nath Bhandari took oath as the Chief Justice of Madras High Court at Raj Bhavan in February 2022. He was administered the oath of office by Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi. 

Justice Bhandari was transferred to Madras HC from Allahabad High Court on November 22, 2021. Before Bhandari, Justice Sanjib Banerjee was serving as the CJ of Madras HC from January 2021 to November 2021 until his transfer to Meghalaya HC.
