Black Fungus Infects 400 People In Tamil Nadu, 75 Per Cent Cases Due To Post-Covid Complications

The impact of the fungal infection is being felt in some districts of Tamil Nadu. However, the state government has set up a panel of more than 10 experts to study the fungus

Chennai: With COVID cases on a high in Tamil Nadu, the death toll is also rising by the day. In this context, the incidence of black fungus has also been on a spike across the country over the past few weeks. Outbreaks appear to be exacerbated in Rajasthan and Gujarat.

The impact of the fungal infection is being felt in some districts of Tamil Nadu. However, the Government of Tamil Nadu has set up a panel of more than 10 experts to study the fungus. In this context, Health Minister Ma Subramanian and Health Secretary Radhakrishnan held consultations with the committee.

Questions about black fungus amassed, it’s known that fungal infections happen due to extensive use of steroids. 400 people in the state were infected with the fungus so far. The government has ordered to set up black fungus wards in hospitals.

"A black fungus ward has been set up at Omandurar Hospital in Chennai on Friday. In this connection, it is planned to appoint a nodal officer for each hospital and an officer for each district. There are enough drugs in stock in the state to treat black fungus. The fungal infection affects organs likes of eyes, nose, and brain. The disease was previously there and did not stem up after the Covid outbreak. Also, the disease is curable," said Director of Medical Education Narayana Babu.

“Fungal infections occur when the immune system is weakened. People with diabetes and those with asthma should be careful. Finding it early can cure black fungus. Moreover, 75 per cent of black fungal infections are due to post-Covid complications. We are taking steps to control the fungal infection and to create awareness among the people about this disease. People are in fear due to Covid implications and its death toll. In this context, it is shocking that more than 400 people in Tamil Nadu alone are affected by black fungus,” he added.
