A postgraduate trainee doctor was raped and murdered at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata while on duty last week. The body of the 32-year-old woman was found on August 9 morning in the seminar hall of the government-run hospital in the West Bengal capital. This incident has triggered a nationwide protest by doctors and medical fraternities.
The Supreme Court on Tuesday heard the suo motu case over the rape and murder of a doctor at the RG Kar Medical College Hospital, Kolkata. The apex court grilled the West Bengal government over its handling of the case and asked why the FIR was registered at 11:45 PM when the crime was detected early in the morning.
The CJI DY Chandrachud led bench said that the case has shocked the conscience of the nation and expressed concern over the victim's pictures and names being circulated on social media.
"We took suo motu action because this is not just the matter of a particular horrific murder and rape...but it raises systemic issue of safety of doctors across India," CJI said. The apex court while hearing the case posed several questions to Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal appearing for the West Bengal Government.
"Crime is detected early in morning, the principal tries to pass this off as suicide and untill night there was no FIR? What was the principal doing? Why no FIR till late in the night? A matter of serious concern !" The CJI said.

Meanwhile, multiple protests seeking justice for the RG Kar Hospital victim, with and without political banners, continued to rock the streets of Kolkata for yet another day on Tuesday even as the CBI grilled a “close acquaintance” of the prime accused for the second successive day to get to the bottom of the motive for the crime.
A Special Investigation Team constituted by the West Bengal government to probe the alleged financial irregularities at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital during the tenure of its former principal Sandip Ghosh filed an FIR and gathered details of the case from a whistleblower.
Chanting 'Justice for R G Kar' and 'Justice for our sister', hundreds of IT professionals took to the streets of Sector V in Salt Lake, the city’s IT Hub, protesting against the rape and murder of the trainee doctor, as reported by news agency PTI.

Kolkata Murder Case LIVE: SC Orders Removal Of Name, Photos, Videos Of Deceased
The Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered the removal of the name, photos, and videos of a trainee doctor, who was raped and murdered in Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, from all social media platforms. A bench headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud said disclosure of the identity of a victim of sexual assault is a violation of its order passed in the Nipun Saxena case.
"This court is constrained to issue an injunctive order since the social and electronic media have proceeded to publish the identity of the deceased and photographs of the dead body after the recovery of the body. We accordingly direct that all references to the name of the deceased in the above incident, photographs and video clips shall forthwith be removed from all social media platforms and electronic media in compliance of this order," the bench, also comprising Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, said, as quoted by news agency PTI.
