KTR Vows To Remove Rajiv Gandhi Statue If BRS Returns To Power; Revanth Reddy Warns Of Retaliation

Revanth Reddy warned that if anyone attempted to remove or damage the Rajiv Gandhi statue, Congress supporters would retaliate forcefully, saying, "Congressmen will hit them with slippers."

BRS Working President KT Rama Rao on Monday criticised Telangana government's plan to place former PM Rajiv Gandhi statue in front of the Secretariat promising that his party would remove it if they regain power. In reaction, CM Revanth Reddy warned that any damage to the statue would be met with strong retaliation, sparking a heated dispute between Congress and BRS.

The controversy was ignited by KTR who vehemently opposed the statue's installation outside the Secretariat. Already, the place in secretariat is traditionally reserved for the Telangana Talli (Mother Telangana) statue, a symbol viewed as Telangana's pride and identity. KTR vowed that if the BRS returns to power, they would not only remove the Rajiv Gandhi statue but also rename other landmarks and schemes bearing the Gandhi name.

KTR further criticised the condition of the old Secretariat in the erstwhile united Andhra Pradesh, describing it as so poorly maintained that fire engines couldn’t even access it in an emergency.

However, soon, Revanth Reddy warned that if anyone attempted to remove or damage Rajiv Gandhi statue, Congress supporters would retaliate forcefully.

This resulted in war of words between Congress and BRS. Responding to Revanth Reddy's statements, KTR took to social media on Tuesday to issue a sharp rebuttal, referring to the Chief Minister as "Cheap Minister Revanth" and accusing him of lacking respect for Telangana's self-respect and pride.

"Mark my words," KTR declared, "We will clear out the trash from the surroundings of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Secretariat the very same day we are back in office. Can’t expect a Delhi Ghulam like you to ever understand the self-respect & pride of Telangana." He also criticized Reddy's use of "filthy language" in front of school children, suggesting it reflected "lousy thinking & uncouth upbringing," and wished him "speedy healing from your mental sickness."

Responding to KTR's post on X, Congress spokesperson Ram Mohan Reddy said, "People of Telangana is not liking the statements of KTR. It's time that he should take back his statement because people carry high respect towards Congress party and the Gandhi family's contribution towards Telangana."

"Being former IT Minister, I don't know how can he make such statements... I see only BJP (ideology) in KTR's statements. Any secular party will not make such statements. I believe that slowly KTR is giving signs of merging BRS with BJP," he said.
