Tamil Nadu Sees Isolated Rain, Chennai's Dams Replenished To 75% Capacity

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted light to moderate rain at isolated places across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal in the coming days.

Parts of Tamil Nadu experienced isolated rainfall on Thursday accompanied by a cool breeze in Chennai and its surrounding areas. The rains have significantly boosted water levels across the state with irrigation tanks and reservoirs reaching impressive storage levels.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted light to moderate rain at isolated places across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal in the coming days. Early morning hours may see haze or mist in some pockets.

Weather Forecast

In Chennai, IMD said, "Light/Moderate rain is likely to occur in some areas. Haze/Mist is likely to prevail in some areas during early morning hours."

The IMD reported squally weather along and off the Tamil Nadu coast with wind speeds ranging from 35 kmph to 45 kmph and gusts reaching up to 55 kmph. The affected areas include the Comorin region and the Gulf of Mannar.

The IMD also noted a low-pressure area over the Southwest Bay of Bengal which is expected to move northwestwards towards the North Tamil Nadu–South Andhra Pradesh coast in the next 24 hours. Subsequently, it is likely to track northwards along the Andhra Pradesh coast.

Independent weather blogger, Tamil Nadu Weatherman said, "Final spell of the rains from the low for KTCC, the rains will start in areas close to the sea, this will be mostly the last spell from this low pressure as the clouds will move into Andhra coast. This will be normal rains. The low pressure is almost parallel to Chennai coast and it will start its journey up and the convergence will be north of the low pressure."

Tamil Nadu Water Storage

According to the Tamil Nadu Water Resources Department, 6,176 out of the 14,140 irrigation tanks in the state have reached full capacity, while another 3,217 tanks report over 75% storage.

The six dams supplying drinking water to Chennai, which have a total capacity of 13,213 Mcft, currently hold 9,909 Mcft of water, accounting for 74.99% of their capacity.
