TN Health Minister Makes Surprise Visit To Paramakudi Govt Hospital, Transfers Dean For 'Negligence'

The situation worsened when Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramaniam found welfare scheme posters featuring former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa within the hospital premises.

In a surprise inspection on Tuesday, Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramaniam visited Paramakudi Government Hospital in Ramanathapuram and mandated the transfer of its dean due to substandard management.

During the visit, Minister Subramaniam expressed dissatisfaction with the hospital’s upkeep, particularly the neglected CT scan room. Despite Chief Minister MK Stalin allocating Rs 47 crore, the work on the basement is still ongoing. Subramanian criticized the PWD officials for failing to take action against the contractor and directed the authorities to take necessary measures.

He also contacted the contractor responsible for the hospital's extension, questioning why even a single floor hadn't been completed in 18 months, as reported by India Today.

The situation worsened when the minister found welfare scheme posters featuring former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa within the hospital premises. This indicated negligence on the part of the Chief Medical Officer (CMO), prompting the minister to order his immediate transfer, citing an adverse impact on public health services, according to a report on DT Next.

Jayalalithaa was the late leader of AIADMK. The party lost the 2021 Assembly elections to the DMK, led by Chief Minister MK Stalin. Following the minister’s directives, the Director of Medical and Rural Health Services has demanded an explanation from the district’s Deputy Director of Health Services regarding the CMO’s negligence.

Additionally, the Health Minister instructed officials to accelerate the construction of a new building for the Paramakudi Government Hospital to improve facilities. The surprise visit comes amid several complains over the sanitation complains of government hospitals in Tamil Nadu,

Further, he commended the team at Chathirakudi PHC upon learning that the PHC had not reported any maternal deaths in the past three years.
