Mizoram: Newly Constructed Kawnpui Railway Station Collapses Due To Rain-Triggered Landslide — VIDEO

As heavy rain continues to batter Mizoram, a railway station collapsed in Kawnpui due to a landslide triggered by heavy downpour.

Mizoram News: A newly constructed railway station collapsed in Mizoram's Kawnpui due to a landslide triggered by heavy rains in the state on Wednesday. Mizoram has been witnessing inclement weather conditions and torrential rain across districts since August 20. The heavy and incessant showers in the northeastern state have resulted in landslides and landslips in several places.

Speaking to news agency ANI on the railway station collapse incident, Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, CPRO of Northeast Frontier Railway said, "Under-construction Kawnpui Railway Station in Mizoram was partially damaged due to landslide. There is no report of any casualty in the incident. The incident occurred on Wednesday, 28th August."

As heavy rain batters Mizoram, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that light spell of showers will continue in the coming days and the sky will remain cloudy.

Mizoram Weather: Schools Closed In Few Districts

In view of heavy downpours, the Mizoram government on Wednesday ordered the closure of schools in four districts. According to news agency PTI, District administrations of Aizawl, Lunglei, Hnahthial and Mamit have issued separate public notices.

As per the notices, all schools will remain closed as a precautionary measure due to inclement weather conditions and torrential rain in the districts.

A notice issued by the Aizawl district administration also said that landslides, mudslides and rock falls have been witnessed in several areas within Aizawl town and its surrounding villages and there is still the possibility of such incidents in certain areas within the district.

Landslides have occurred on certain crucial roads in Aizawl and other parts of the state due to heavy rain on Wednesday, PTI reported, citing officials. No casualty has not been reported so far in such incidents, officials said.

At least 42 people have been killed in landslides and other natural calamities across the state since March this year, according to the state disaster management and rehabilitation department.
