Man Claiming To Be Agniveer Among 6 Held For Rs 50L Robbery At Bhopal Jewellery Store

The prime accused, Mohit Singh Baghel, 19, hails from Rewa district. Police said they had recovered his ID card and would contact the Army to verify the details.

A man who claims to be an Agniveer is among six people arrested on Sunday for allegedly robbing a jewellery store of valuables and cash worth Rs 50 lakh in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh.

The prime accused, Mohit Singh Baghel, 19, hails from Rewa district.

According to a PTI report, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 2) (DCP) Shraddha Tiwari said Baghel claimed to be an Agniveer — a short-term contractual soldier — posted in Pathankot, Punjab.

Bhopal Commissioner of Police Harinarayanachari Mishra said the police had recovered his identity card, and were going to contact the Army authorities to verify the details.

Baghel told the police that he had come to Bhopal on leave to meet his friend Akash Rai in the city’s Mandideep area.

On August 13, Baghel and Rai entered a jewellery store at Bagsewania carrying firearms and wearing helmets, and robbed the establishment, police told PTI. Baghel, Rai and four others, including a woman, have been arrested from Bhopal and Rewa in connection with the robbery.

According to PTI, police sources said Baghel had studied up to Bachelor of Arts (BA) second year, while Rai had completed Bachelor of Commerce (BComm) second year.

Mohali Agniveer Robs Car

In July, an Agniveer was among three arrested in a vehicle snatching case. According to PTI, the accused were identified as Agniveer Ishmeet Singh alias Ishu, Prabhpreet Singh alias Prabh and Balkaran Singh.

Senior Superintendent of Police Sandeep Kumar Garg said the trio had allegedly stolen a car at gunpoint after booking a ride through an app. They used pepper spray on the driver's face while snatching the vehicle in Mohali district.

Ishmeet, who was posted in West Bengal, had come to Punjab on leave two months ago but reportedly did not rejoin work after his leave of one month ended. He hails from Punjab's Fazilka district. The accused were also involved in a few other incidents of vehicle snatching and theft and used to flee to Fazilka after committing the crimes, police said.
