Kerala Braces For Heavy Rainfall Till June 15; IMD Issues Orange, Yellow Alerts Across State

The IMD forecasts widespread rainfall in Kerala and Lakshadweep until June 15, issuing yellow and orange alerts for heavy showers and rough seas despite a weak monsoon.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast widespread rainfall across Kerala and Lakshadweep until June 15, prompting the issuance of multiple yellow and orange alerts. The alerts come in anticipation of heavy showers, gusty winds, and rough sea conditions, despite the southwest monsoon currently remaining weak over the state.

Though monsoon activity has been subdued, sporadic rainfall has been reported across Kerala and Lakshadweep. Key rainfall figures (in cm) recorded include: Kunnamkulam (Thrissur): 5, Vaikom (Kottayam) & Kunnamkulam AWS: 2 each and Kollam, Kayamkulam, Enamakkal, Mattanchery AWS, Vilangankunnu ARG: 1 each.

The IMD has predicted rain or thundershowers at most places in both Kerala and Lakshadweep over the coming days.

Kerala Yellow Alert: Possibility Of Heavy Rain (6–11 cm)

June 11: Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, Kasaragod

June 12: Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad

June 13: Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Lakshadweep

June 14: Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Lakshadweep

Kerala Orange Alert: Heavy To Very Heavy Rainfall (11–20 cm)

June 12: Kannur, Kasaragod

June 13: Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, Kasaragod

June 14: Kannur, Kasaragod

A heavy rainfall alert is currently is in effect from June 12–16 for various districts. Similarly, warning for fishermen is in place for both Kerala and Lakshadweep from June 12–14 due to strong winds and potential rough seas.

The IMD has urged residents in hilly areas and landslide-prone regions to remain vigilant, while fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing into the sea during the warning period. District authorities have been asked to activate disaster preparedness measures in vulnerable areas.
