Atmosphere Of Excitement & Concern As Bengaluru Prepares For Ganga Aarti-Inspired 'Cauvery Aarti'
The Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB), responsible for the event, has planned an elaborate ceremony featuring priests from Varanasi.

The Karnataka government's decision to organize a grand 'Cauvery Aarti' at Sankey Tank on March 21 has sparked a mix of excitement and controversy. Modeled after the renowned Ganga Aarti in Varanasi, the event aims to honour the River Cauvery, which is crucial to Karnataka's water resources. However, concerns have been raised over its ecological impact and administrative appropriateness.
The Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB), responsible for the event, has planned an elaborate ceremony featuring priests from Varanasi, a grand procession, traditional rituals, a laser show, and live music, as reported by Deccan Herald. Sacred water from Bhagamandala, a revered site at the river's origin, will also be distributed as prasada. High-profile attendees, including Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, are expected, with a turnout of over 10,000 people anticipated, reported India Today.
Concerns
Despite its cultural and spiritual intentions, the event has drawn criticism from environmentalists and local residents. Detractors argue that organizing such a large-scale religious gathering at Sankey Tank—a vital urban water body—could disrupt its delicate ecosystem. Bright lights, amplified sound, and an influx of attendees might disturb aquatic life and local biodiversity, as per the report.
Some citizens have suggested relocating the aarti to a less ecologically sensitive area to prevent potential damage.
Another point of contention is BWSSB’s involvement in the event. Critics question whether the agency, primarily responsible for managing water supply and sewage systems, should be overseeing cultural and religious programs.
