Bengaluru Continues To Receive Rainfall; IMD Issues Orange Alert For Coastal & Interior Karnataka — Details

The IMD has forecast a rainy week for Bengaluru, cautioning residents to expect light to moderate rain or thundershowers, occasionally accompanied by gusty winds with speeds reaching up to 40 kmph.

Persistent heavy rains have disrupted life across Karnataka, particularly in Bengaluru, where waterlogged streets, power outages, and traffic snarls have become the norm over the past few days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted continued rainfall in the region and issued alerts for several districts.

Bengaluru Rains

The IMD has forecast a rainy week for Bengaluru, cautioning residents to expect light to moderate rain or thundershowers, occasionally accompanied by gusty winds with speeds reaching up to 40 kmph, reported Jagran. The city is expected to remain under a generally cloudy sky, with temperatures hovering around 28°C during the day and 21°C at night.

In light of the forecast, commuters in Bengaluru are advised to plan ahead for delays, with the risk of traffic congestion and waterlogging particularly high during peak hours. Low-lying areas face potential flooding, and power outages or tree falls may occur due to strong winds.

Karnataka Weather Update

A more severe orange alert has been issued for Karnataka’s coastal regions, warning of extremely heavy rain, thunderstorms, and lightning.

The IMD said: "A trough runs from the cyclonic circulation over Eastcentral Arabian Sea off North Karnataka-Goa coasts to Coastal Andhra Pradesh and extends upto 3.1 km above mean sea level. The upper air cyclonic circulation over central parts of Andra Pradesh & adjoining south Telangana and extends upto 3.1 km above mean sea level has become less marked."

The Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) echoed IMD's concerns, indicating the likelihood of moderate to heavy rain across southern interior districts and coastal areas with isolated spots potentially witnessing very heavy rainfall. Thunderstorms and lightning are also expected in various parts of the state.

Southwest Monsoon Onset

Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon continues its gradual advance, having reached more parts of the South Arabian Sea, Maldives, Comorin area, and sections of the Bay of Bengal as of May 21. The IMD expects monsoon conditions to become favorable for its onset over Kerala within the next three to four days. Additional progress of the monsoon is also anticipated in areas including Lakshadweep, Tamil Nadu, and the northeastern states.
