Delhi Traffic: Know Procession Areas To Avoid On Muharram, City Buses To Follow Altered Routes

Muharram 2024: Delhi Police has issued traffic guidance for Muharram processions on July 16-17, 2024, including routes, closures, and bus diversions.

Muharram 2024: In view of the Muharram Tazia processions on 16th and July 17 2024, the Delhi Police has issued a comprehensive traffic advisory to manage the expected congestion and ensure smooth traffic flow. The advisory, announced on Monday, details specific routes, diversions, and traffic regulations.

The main Tazia processions will commence on the night of July 16 and continue into July 17. The key routes include one starting from Chhatta Shahzad, Kalan Mahal at 9:00 PM, passing through Kamra Bangash, Chitli Qabar, Churi Walan, Matia Mahal, Jama Masjid, Chawri Bazar, and Hauz Qazi, before returning via the reverse route.

Another procession will begin from Old Police Chowki, Ashok Basti at 9:00 PM, moving through Qutub Road, Khari Baoli, Lal Kuan, Hauz Kazi, Chawri Bazar, and Jama Masjid, and then reversing the route. Additionally, Tazias from Nizamuddin, Okhla, and Mehrauli will proceed directly to Karbala.

Processions will also occur in East, North-East, Shahdara, North-West, South-East, South, and West districts, concluding at local Karbalas. On July 17, the processions will regroup at 11:00 AM and proceed from Chowk Jama Masjid to Karbala, Jor Bagh, New Delhi, via Ajmeri Gate, Pahar Ganj Bridge, Chelmsford Road, Connaught Place, Sansad Marg, Rafi Marg, Kartavya Path, Tughlak Road, Aurobindo Marg, and Jorbagh Road.

Delhi Traffic: City Buses To Follow Altered Routes Amid Muharram Tazia Processions

To accommodate the processions, city buses will follow altered routes. On Desh Bandhu Gupta Road, buses bound for Ajmeri Gate, New Delhi Railway Station, Connaught Place, and Central Secretariat will be diverted at Aram Bagh. Buses from East and Central Districts to Connaught Place and Central Secretariat will terminate at Mandi House, returning via Bhagwan Dass Road and Tilak Marg. Buses heading to Connaught Place and Central Secretariat from North and East Districts will terminate at Shivaji Statue. Buses to Central Secretariat and Connaught Place from Shanti Path/Panchsheel/Sardar Patel Marg will terminate at Udyan Marg. Buses on Tughlaq Road will be diverted at Prithviraj Road or Safdarjung Road. Buses will be redirected from Aurobindo Chowk towards South Delhi when the procession reaches Gole Methi.

Traffic management will be active from 12:00 PM to 9:30 PM on roads including Jama Masjid Road/Chawri Bazar Road, Ajmeri Gate Road, Asaf Ali Road, Basant Road, Qutub Road, Panchkuian Road, the Outer Circle of Connaught Place, Rafi Marg, Krishna Menon Marg, Aurobindo Marg, Motilal Nehru Marg, Barakhamba Road, Imtiaz Khan Marg, Janpath, and Baba Kharak Singh Marg.

Travellers heading to New Delhi Railway Station on July 17, especially in the evening, are advised to leave early and plan their routes carefully to avoid delays. Recommended routes from West Delhi include Shankar Road, Talkatora Road, Ashoka Road, 'C'-Hexagon, and Tilak Marg. From South Delhi, travellers can go through Janpath, Ferozshah Road, Mandi House, Barakhamba Road, Ranjit Singh Marg, and Jawahar Lal Nehru Marg.

The public is urged to avoid the mentioned routes during procession times and follow the directions of traffic police to minimise inconvenience. Commuters are advised to use metro services where possible, the traffic police stated.
