Before Gukesh, the record for the youngest world chess champion was held by Russian legend Garry Kasparov, who claimed the title in 1985 at the age of 22 by defeating Anatoly Karpov.

Gukesh's chess journey is filled with achievements

D Gukesh won the Asian School Chess Championship in 2015 and World Youth Chess Championship in 2018 in the Under-12 category. That same year, he won five gold medals at the Asian Youth Chess Championship.

Gukesh became an International Grandmaster after his victory in the 34th Open de Cappelle La Grande chess tournament in France in March 2018. He was the youngest Grandmaster in the world until 2019 and still holds the record as the youngest Grandmaster ever from India.

"I am just living my dream," said D Gukesh, the newly-crowned world chess champion

"I was dreaming this moment for last 10 years. Happy I realised this dream," Gukesh said after his victory, PTI reported.

"I got a bit emotional because I was not expecting to win. But then I got a chance to press on.

"I've been dreaming about this and living this moment since I was 6 or 7. Every chess player wants to live this moment. I'm living my dream. I'd like to thank God from candidates till the championship."
