Amit Rohidas Set To Miss India’s Semifinal Match At Olympics 2024 After Receiving One-Match Ban In Quarters

Indian men's hockey team player Amit Rohidas received a one-match ban after being shown a red card in the Paris Olympics 2024 quarterfinal match against Great Britain on July 4 (Sunday). Consequently, he will miss India's semifinal match on August 6 (Tuesday). India went on to win the contest in a shoot-off after both teams ended the match 1-1.

The incident occurred during the second quarter of India’s quarterfinal match against Great Britain at the Paris Olympics when Amit Rohidas accidentally hit Great Britain’s Will Calnan. During a duel in the midfield, Rohidas' stick was in an unnatural position and made contact with Calnan's head. The incident was reviewed by the officials and Rohidas was subsequently shown a red card.

Rohidas was sent off in the 17th minute, leaving India to play the remaining 43 minutes with one fewer player. As a result of Rohidas' suspension, India will have a reduced squad of 15 players available for their next match against Germany.

FIH Releases Statement Confirming Rohidas' Suspension

Afterwards, the Federation Internationale de Hockey (FIH) also imposed a one-match suspension on him for violating the FIH code of conduct.

"On 4 August 2024, Rohidas Amit was suspended for one match for a breach of the FIH Code of Conduct which occurred during match no.32 India vs Great Britain on 4th August, 2024. The suspension affects match no.35 on 6th August 2024, where Rohidas Amit will not participate, and India will play with a squad of 15 players only," a statement from FIH read.

Hockey India Appeal Match Umpiring & Decision Making

Hockey India has expressed concerns about the umpiring quality in the match against Great Britain, citing inconsistencies that may have affected the game’s outcome.

"The complaint focuses on a critical match between India and Great Britain, where several inconsistencies in officiating potentially influenced the game's outcome," said Hockey India in a statement.
