IPL 2020: Virender Sehwag Defends Virat Kohli's Bangalore Captaincy, Says A Captain Is Only As Good As His Team

Virender Sehwag does not agree with Gambhir's statement. Sehwag says that a captain is good when he has a good team. Sehwag also said that RCB needs two more new batsmen apart from Kohli, de Villiers and Padikkal.

Royal Challengers Bangalore has ended its journey in IPL 2020 after losing in the Eliminator against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Even after 13 years, RCB's wait to win the IPL title still continues. After this poor performance of the team, questions have been raised about the captaincy of RCB captain Virat Kohli in the corridors of cricket. Recently, former Indian opener and captain Gautam Gambhir, who won two titles while leading Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL, had suggested that Virat Kohli should give up the captaincy.

But his former partner Virender Sehwag does not agree with Gambhir's statement. Sehwag says that a captain is good when he has a good team. Sehwag also said that RCB needs two more new batsmen apart from Kohli, de Villiers and Padikkal.
“A captain is only as good as his team. When Virat Kohli captains India, he is able to deliver the results. He wins matches – ODIs, T20Is Tests. But when he captains RCB, his team is not able to perform,” Sehwag told Cricbuzz.
“It is very important for the captain to have a good team. So, I believe the management should not try and think of changing their captain and rather think of how they can improve this team. Who all should be added to the team to make sure their performance improves?” he added.
Gambhir, who made Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) a two-time IPL champion, in a live interaction with ESPNCricinfo, when asked if he would have been in charge of the franchise, would have changed the captain, he said: “100%, because the problem is about accountability. Eight years into the tournament [without a trophy], eight years is a long time. Tell me any other captain…forget about the captain, tell me any other player who would have got eight years and wouldn’t have won the title and would have still continued with it. So it has to be accountability. A captain needs to take accountability.” “It’s not only about one year, it’s not only about this. I have nothing against Virat Kohli but somewhere down the line, he needs to put his hand up and say, ‘yes, I am responsible. I am accountable’.
