Ind vs NZ: Shreyas Iyer Becomes First Indian Batsman To Score A Ton And Fifty On Test Debut

Shreyas Iyer steadied the Indian innings when the team was struggling after losing five wickets on the score of 51 runs. His 65 -run innings included eight fours and a six.

New Delhi: India's star batter Shreyas Iyer created history on Day 4 during India vs New Zealand 1st Test on Sunday at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur.

Shreyas has now become the first Indian batsman to score a century and a fifty in his debut match itself. There have been two such batsmen in Test cricket from India, who scored half-centuries in both the innings in the debut test, but none could score fifty and a century in their debut Test.

Dilawar Hussain made his debut for team India in the Kolkata Test against England in 1933–34, scoring 59 in the first innings and 57 in the second innings. Apart from him, Sunil Gavaskar played an innings of 65 and an unbeaten 67 against the West Indies at Port of Spain in 1970-71.

Coming back to Ind vs NZ 1st Test, Shreyas Iyer steadied the Indian innings when the team was struggling after losing five wickets on the score of 51 runs. His 65 -run innings included eight fours and a six.

Shreyas shared 52-run stand with R Ashwin for the sixth wicket and 64-run stand for the seventh wicket with wicketkeeper-batsman Wriddhiman Saha. On the back of these two partnerships, India were able to pull themselves back into the game.

Shreyas became the 16th Indian batsman to score a century in his debut Test by scoring 105 runs against the Kiwis. The elite list includes names of some legendary Indian cricketers like Lala Amarnath, Gundappa Vishwanath, Sourav Ganguly and Rohit Sharma.
