New Delhi: In what may sound unbelievable, a remote group of islands in Russia has declared a state of emergency after a large number of polar bears took over the region. The incident is of Russia’s Novaya Zemlya archipelago, where the administration had to issue an alert as the polar bears invaded the residential and military areas. The local administration in-charge Zhigansha Musin was quoted by The Guardian as saying: “There’s never been such a mass invasion of polar bears. They have literally been chasing people.” The Russian environmental authorities have deployed a team of specialists in the region to sedate and remove dozens of hungry polar bears that have besieged the people living there. The move came after officials in the Novaya Zemlya archipelago, with a population of about 3,000 people, appealed for help, the daily reported in its online portal. As per reports, over 50 bears were seen in and around Belushya the main settlement of the Novaya Zemlya archipelago and more than five were reportedly seen on the local military garrison where the air and defense forces are based. Social media has been flooded with pictures of the invasion and the endangered animals can be seen entering people’s houses and casually loitering at garbage dumps. As per reports, the officials have warned that if sedating measure fails, then more drastic measured will be required. Local officials have said that the bears have lost their fear of police patrols.
