Why Do Women Tie Sacred Thread 7 Times Around Banyan Tree On Vat Savitri Vrat? Know Its Hindu Significance

Vat Savitri Vrat will be observed on 26 May. This fast holds great significance for married women. But why is raw thread tied 7 times around the banyan tree? Here's what it means.

Vat Savitri Vrat 2025: Vat Savitri Vrat holds deep spiritual importance for married Hindu women, especially in honoring the sacred bond between husband and wife. According to mythology, on the day of Jyeshtha Amavasya, Lord Yama restored the life of Savitri’s husband, Satyavan, under a banyan tree. Since then, the Vat tree has been considered sacred and is worshipped as Akshay Vat, meaning 'the eternal tree' — one that never perishes. This is why women worship the banyan tree on this auspicious day, seeking blessings for their husband’s long life and marital harmony.

Spiritual Reason Behind Tying Raw Thread Around The Banyan Tree

During the Vat Savitri Vrat, married women perform a ritual of wrapping a raw cotton thread (kaccha soot) seven times around the trunk of the banyan tree. This act symbolises the unbreakable bond of marriage for seven lifetimes. The thread represents strength and continuity, and wrapping it around the tree is a prayer for lifelong unity and prosperity in married life.

After performing the puja, women recite the Savitri-Satyavan story and pray for the well-being and longevity of their husbands. It is believed that doing so bestows them with everlasting marital bliss and good fortune.

How To Celebrate Vat Savitri Vrat At Home Without A Banyan Tree

In case one cannot find a banyan tree on the day of the vrat, a branch of the tree may be brought home a day prior and planted in a pot for the puja. The same rituals and prayers can then be performed at home with equal devotion.

As per Hindu belief, Lord Brahma resides in the roots, Lord Vishnu in the trunk, and Lord Shiva in the branches of the banyan tree. The branches are also seen as symbolic of Goddess Savitri herself. Worshipping this sacred tree is believed to invoke the blessings of the Tridev (Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva).

Special Yog On May 26: Somvati Amavasya And Vat Savitri Vrat

This year, May 26 falls today, on a Monday, coinciding with Jyeshtha Amavasya. This creates the auspicious combination of Somvati Amavasya, considered highly beneficial for women observing the Vat Savitri fast. The convergence of these events makes the day even more powerful for seeking divine blessings and performing the vrat with full devotion.
