Govardhan Puja 2024 Date

Govardhan Puja is celebrated the day after Diwali, corresponding to the Pratipada tithi of Kartik Shukla. This year, the Pratipada tithi begins on November 1, 2024, at 6:16 PM and concludes on November 2 at 8:21 PM. Therefore, according to the Udaya tithi, it will be celebrated on Saturday, November 2.

The festival of Govardhan Puja is associated with Lord Krishna, Govardhan Hill, and Indra. According to religious legends, Krishna initiated this festival. On Govardhan, devotees create images of cows, Govardhan Hill, and Krishna's child form using cow dung and worship them. Let's explore the significance of Govardhan Puja and its benefits.

How Did Govardhan Puja Begin?

According to the story associated with Govardhan Puja, on the day of Pratipada during the Shukla Paksha of Kartik, Lord Krishna humbled Indra by lifting the Govardhan Hill. When Indra unleashed heavy rains upon the residents of Braj, Krishna used his little finger to create shelter under the hill, protecting the villagers. This event marked the beginning of the tradition of worshipping Govardhan Hill.

Benefits Of Govardhan Puja

Govardhan Puja is celebrated to commemorate Lord Krishna's victory over Indra, sing the defeat of pride. It is believed that creating images of Govardhan Hill, Krishna in his childhood form, and cowherds from cow dung brings prosperity to homes. Additionally, 56 types of dishes, known as Annakoot, are prepared as an offering to the deity. This act is said to invoke the blessings of Goddess Annapurna, ensuring an abundance of food in the household.

During Govardhan Puja, worship of Govardhan Hill and cows is emphasised. The Skanda Purana mentions the merits of cow worship and donations, stating that they alleviate fears of death and various afflictions, leading to the resolution of difficulties.
