Rohingyas Using Assam For Safe Passage To Delhi, Kashmir, Says CM Himanta Sarma

CM Sarma said proactive steps need to be taken to prevent Rohingyas, smugglers and insurgents from using Assam as a transit point for passage to other states.

New Delhi: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday said his state was being used as a corridor by Rohingya Muslims from Bangladesh for safe passage to Delhi or Jammu and Kashmir with the connivance of some brokers in Tripura, news agency PTI reported.

Addressing the Superintendents of Police convention at Bongaigaon on Saturday, CM Sarma said, ''Assam is now being used as a corridor by the Rohingyas to go to Delhi or Jammu and Kashmir. Our investigations have revealed that some brokers of Tripura facilitate this infiltration.”

He added that while infiltration from Bangladesh was almost reduced to zero in the last several years, some recent activities along the India-Bangladesh border in Karimganj district has given rise to fears of illegal crossovers.

The CM said proactive steps need to be taken to prevent Rohingyas, smugglers and insurgents from using Assam as a transit point for passage to other states.

The director general of police has taken some measures to check this while the Karimganj Superintendent of Police has been asked to step up vigil, he said.

''Authorities of three districts in Barak Valley should remain active and we should not just confine ourselves by deporting the identified infiltrators but go to Tripura, arrest the brokers and break the backbone of this syndicate,'' CM Sarma said.

The Barak Valley region of Assam straddles three districts — Cachar, Karimgaj and Hailakandi.

He said suspected infiltrators from across the border in Bangladesh are using the rail route for crossover attempts and the railway police need to be awake and alert to the situation.

''Intelligence should be stepped up in all railway stations from Barak Valley to the western border of Assam so that the Rohingyas are intercepted and decisive action is taken against them,'' CM Sarma said.
