Manipur Violence: CBI Files Chargesheet Against Nine For Abduction And Murder Of Woman

The CBI filed chargesheet against nine accused in a case related to the alleged abduction and murder of a woman in Manipur.

New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Saturday filed a chargesheet against nine accused in a case related to the alleged abduction and subsequent murder of a woman during the Manipur ethnic clashes in July this year.

The probe agency in a statement said the chargesheet was filed before the Special Judge of the CBI Court in Assam’s Guwahati.

According to CBI, a case was registered on a request from the Manipur government and further notification of the Union government. As per the FIR initially registered at the Lamlai police station in Manipur’s Imphal East district, the deceased was forcibly detained on July 15 at the Sawombung Gate area by a mob numbering 100, including armed miscreants. She was later abducted and her body was recovered on the same day.

The CBI said that during investigation they found that the accused were allegedly involved in the abduction and murder of the woman. Based on its probe, the CBI filed a charge sheet before the Guwahati court as per the orders of the Supreme Court. The Central agency also said that further investigation is underway to identify the other accused involved in the case.

Notably, during the ethnic clashes in Manipur in July this year, a 55-year-old woman was allegedly abducted by a mob and later shot dead.

The Manipur police soon registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The state police in a tweet a day after the incident said that nine persons, including five women, have been arrested in connection with the incident and a vehicle along with a few arms and ammunition have been seized.

The ethnic clashes in Manipur that erupted on May 3 this year has so far claimed at least 190 lives and injured over a thousand others, besides internally displacing more than 60,000 people.
