Assam Police Seizes Heroin Worth Rs 2 Crore Near Guwahati, 5 Arrested

During a thorough search of the vehicle, the joint team of police recovered the narcotic drugs hidden in secret chambers of the car, the Assam police said in a press statement.  

Guwahati: The Assam police late Saturday night apprehended three persons and seized 250 grams of heroin worth Rs two crore at Amingaon on the outskirts of the state capital Guwahati.

Based on specific input, the Special Task Force (STF) of Assam police led by Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Kalyan Pathak along with a team of the Kamrup police intercepted a Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) coming from Manipur at the Amingaon area in Kamrup district.

During a thorough search of the vehicle, the joint team of police recovered the narcotic drugs hidden in secret chambers of the car, the Assam police said in a press statement.  

The police later arrested the three vehicle occupants, including two women, in connection with the alleged smuggling of the contraband item. After interrogation of the trio and a follow-up action led to the arrest of two more persons involved in the illegal trade, the press statement said.      

The accused have been identified as Abdul Rajak Shah (36), Md Yunus Khan (39), Bibi Sara (41) and Jarina (25), all residents of Kwakta area under Moirang police station in Manipur’s Bishnupur district and Lila Kanta Saikia (28), hailing from Simen Chapori area under Simen Chapori police station in Assam’s Dhemaji district, it added.

The press statement further said that a case 116/23 in this regard has been registered at the North Guwahati police station under section 21(C)/29 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.

Speaking exclusively to ABP Live, ASP, STF Kalyan Pathak said, “Three persons Md Yunus Khan, Bibi Sara and Jarina brought the consignment of heroin first from Mizoram to Manipur’s Churachandpur district and was transporting it further to a Lower Assam district to be sold to customers there. Abdul Rajak Shah, who is the kingpin, came by a flight from Manipur’s Imphal to Guwahati on Saturday morning and was staying in a house with another accused Lila Kanta Saikia in Guwahati’s Basistha area. All the five accused are currently being interrogated at the North Guwahati police station and will be produced before the NDPS court, Amingaon, Kamrup."   

The Kamrup district has become a hub of smuggling of contraband items and several persons have been arrested by the STF and Kamrup police besides seizing contraband items including narcotic drugs and wild animal body parts in the recent past.
