12 Dead, Over 75,000 Affected As Assam Flood Situation Remains Grim. Three Rivers Above Danger Level

One person was swept away in the flood waters in Assam’s Sivasagar district, taking the toll to 12.

New Delhi: The overall flood situation in Assam remained grim on Sunday with the deluge claiming the life of one person and affecting over 75,000 people.

One person was swept away in the flood waters in Assam’s Sivasagar district, taking the toll to 12. Sivasagar happens to be the second worst-affected district after Dhemaji.

According to an official bulletin, a total of 75,209 people in 357 villages across eight districts of the state still remain affected by the floods. Scores of houses have been completely inundated in Dhemaji. The districts which are still reeling under the floods are Dhemaji, Sivasagar, Chirang, Darrang, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Kokrajhar and Sonitpur.

A total of 46,754 people have been affected in Dhemaji followed by Sivasagar with 22,650 flood-hit victims.

As many as 1,515 people are staying in 61 relief camps set up by the respective district administrations in the affected areas.

As per the official bulletin, the floods have damaged hundreds of houses, affected over 6,136 hectares of crop areas, apart from damaging several roads, bridges, culverts, irrigation canals and embankments.

River Brahmaputra continued to flow above the danger level at Dhubri and Neamatighat in Jorhat district, while Disang and Dikhow are flowing above the danger level at Nanglamuraghat and Sivasagar district respectively.

Meanwhile, all schools and colleges in Himachal Pradesh will remain closed on Monday due to incessant rainfall, an order by the Department of Education informed on Sunday.

This comes as the hill state is once again witnessing heavy rains that have caused landslides with trees uprooted. Several houses and vehicles have been damaged and 150 roads were blocked, as per PTI.

"Keeping in view the incessant rains in whole of Himachal Pradesh and considering the safety and security of students, the Government of Himachal Pradesh orders to keep all Schools and Colleges (Government as well as Private) closed on dated 14th August, 2023," Sunil Verma, the Joint Secretary (Education) to the Government of Himachal Pradesh said.
