US Backs India's Ban On Chinese Apps; Here's Why Tik-Tok Ban Will Hit China The Hardest

The US Republican leader Nikki Haley has praised India's move to ban Chinese apps. She said that it shows India will not back down from China’s aggression.

New Delhi: The United States has shown support towards India's decision of banning Chinese application citing security threat and data sharing concerns. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Wednesday welcomed New Delhi's decision saying it will "boost India's integrity and national security." Republican leader and  Former US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley has also praised India’s decision to ban Chinese Apps in the wake of the violent clash of troops at the Galwan Valley, Ladakh. "We welcome India's ban on certain mobile apps that serves as an appendage of the CCP's (Chinese Communist Party) surveillance State," Pompeo told reporters at a news conference held at the Foggy Bottom headquarters of the State Department. India's clean app approach will boost India's sovereignty. It will also boost India's integrity and national security," Pompeo had said. India is continuing to show it won’t back down from China’s aggression.” Why  Ban of Tik-Tok will affect China the most? After the launch of TikTok in 2017, Indians became one of the largest user bases for the app. According to reports for every 10 downloads of the app, 6 were done in India. Over 30 percent of app downloads were done in India. The company was expecting Rs 100 crore turnover this year. It is expected that the ban could impact the company’s business immensely. In 2019 when the app was banned for one week, the company said that it will have a loss of $50 lakh. The list of 59 mobile apps with their origin in China includes TikTok, SHAREit, US Browser, Baidu map, Helo, Mi Community, Club Factory, WeChat, UC News, Weibo, Xender, Meitu, CamScanner, and Clean Master - Cheetah Mobile. The order issued by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) said that the 59 mobile applications that have been banned by the Government of India "are prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, the security of the state and public order”.
