Amid Tensions With India, Shehbaz Sharif Seeks Help From Jailed Former Pakistan PM Imran Khan

Amid escalating tensions with India, Pakistani Army Chief Asim Munir and PM Shehbaz Sharif have sought help from former PM Imran Khan, who is currently in prison. Read all about it here.

Pakistani Army Chief Asim Munir and PM Shehbaz Sharif have now sought help from former Prime Minister Imran Khan amid the rising tensions with India. Four former military officers have been sent to negotiate with Imran Khan, who is in jail, sources said.

Imran Khan has reportedly been asked to stop the protests in Sindh by his party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf and extend support to the country's army chief Asim Munir.

After the Pulwama attack, Imran Khan, who was then the Prime Minister, had removed Asim Munir from the ISI chief's post.

For the first time in the history of ISI, a serving chief was removed before the end of his tenure. This soured the relations between Munir and Khan. In fact, Asim Munir had a big role to play in Imran Khan's imprisonment.

However, the escalating tensions with India after the Pahalgam attack have both Sharif and Munir on their toes. Khan's PTI is turning out to be a strong Opposition in the country and has been successful in moulding public opinion with its sustained protests.

Thus, Sharif and Munir have now reached out to Khan to placate him.

Why Is Imran Khan In Jail?

Former Pakistan PM Imran Khan is serving a 14-year sentence in prison in a land corruption case related to the Al-Qadir Trust. His wife, Bushra Bibi, is also serving a seven-year prison term.

Khan has been in jail since August 2023. Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi were found to have been involved in corruption to the tune of 190 million Pounds.
