Russia-Ukraine Crisis: 35 Killed, Over 100 Wounded As Russia Strikes Military Base Near Polish Border

The Russian planes fired around 30 rockets at the Yavoriv International Center for Peacekeeping and Security, Reuters reported Regional Governor Maksym Kozytskyy as saying.

Lviv: At least 35 people were killed and 134 others wounded on Sunday after a Russian missile attack on a large Ukrainian military facility near the border with North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) member Poland, said officials.

The Russian planes fired around 30 rockets at the Yavoriv International Center for Peacekeeping and Security, Reuters reported Regional Governor Maksym Kozytskyy as saying.

The Regional Governor added that some were intercepted before they hit.

Ukrainian Defence Minister Oleksii Reznikov too confirmed about the attack.

“Russia has attacked the International Center for Peacekeeping & Security near Lviv. Foreign instructors work here. Information about the victims is being clarified,” Reznikov said in an online post.

The 360 square-km facility, less than 25 km from the Polish border, is one of Ukraine’s biggest and the largest in the western part of the country.

A Ukrainian defence ministry representative said the ministry was still trying to establish if any foreign instructors were at the centre at the time of the attack, as per Reuters.

This comes as Ukraine held most of its drills with NATO nations there before the invasion. The last major exercises were in September last year.

However, all foreign instructors left the training ground in mid-February, while leaving all the equipment, as per the Ukrainian media.

This took place in the weeks before Russia invaded on February 24.

The Russian troops have so far destroyed 3,687 Ukrainian military infrastructure facilities, Russian Defence Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov was quoted by Russian news agencies as saying on Sunday.
