Russia-Ukraine Conflict | Russian Forces Shell Mosque Sheltering Over 80 Civilians, Says Ukrainian Govt

Earlier, the Ukrainian officials had accused Russia of damaging a cancer hospital and several other residential buildings in the southern city of Mykolaiv with shelling from heavy artillery.

New Delhi: Amid the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the Ukraine government on Saturday said that the Russian military has shelled a mosque sheltering more than 80 people in the city of Mariupol.

According to a report by news agency AP, the Russian forces shelled a mosque in the southern Ukrainian port city of Mariupol where over 80 people, including children and Turkish citizens, had taken refuge, the Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry said on Saturday. However, as per AP report, the government hasn’t reported any casualty yet.

Taking to its Twitter handle, the Foreign Ministry said, "The mosque of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent and his wife Roxolana (Hurrem Sultan) in Mariupol was shelled by Russian invaders. More than 80 adults and children are hiding there from the shelling, including citizens of Turkey."

Earlier, the Ukrainian officials had accused Russia of damaging a cancer hospital and several other residential buildings in the southern city of Mykolaiv with shelling from heavy artillery.

Meanwhile, the Russian rocket attacks destroyed a Ukrainian airbase near the town of Vasylkiv in the Kyiv region on Saturday. The rocket attacks also hit an ammunition depot, according to Vasylkiv Mayor Natalia Balasynovych.

Notably, the Russian military forces have moved closer to Ukrainian capital Kyiv and have been targeting civilian areas in several other cities.

On Friday, three missiles hit civilian buildings in the central city of Dnipro, destroying a shoe factory and killing one security guard.

So far, Dnipro had been considered a safe haven, suffering only a few attacks since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24.

As per officials, a home for the disabled near Kharkiv was also bombed, with 330 people there at the time.
