'Imran Khan Begged Pak Army Till Last Minute': Maryam Nawaz On Former PM Ouster

PML-N vice president Maryam Nawaz said the days of trouble for Khan had begun while noting that the ousted PM’s corruption stories would soon come to the fore.

New Delhi: Targetting Pakistan's ousted Prime Minister Imran Khan, ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) vice president Maryam Nawaz has alleged that the former Prime Minister was so desperate to cling to power that he "begged" the military establishment till the last minute to save his government.

The Pakistan Army, which succeeded in multiple coups, holds considerable power in security and foreign policy matters. However, the Army has maintained a distance from the recent high octane political tussle, saying it has nothing to do with politics.

"Imran Khan was so desperate that he, till his last minutes in power, had begged the establishment to save his government. He even had requested former president and PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari to help him in the wake of a no-confidence motion against him," Maryam said at a workers' convention on Tuesday, reported news agency PTI.

While talking at the rally, Maryam hinted that the days of trouble for Imran Khan have begun.

"Soon Khan along with his cabinet members will be behind bars on irrefutable corruption charges," announced Maryam.

Maryam is holding rallies, especially in Punjab, to counter Imran Khan's public power shows.

Meanwhile, Pakistan's deposed prime minister Nawaz Sharif will return from London next month after Eid to face the courts, a senior PML-N leader has said, a day after the new government issued a passport to the former three-time premier to come back to his home country.

The 72-year-old PML-N supremo, against whom several corruption cases were launched by the government of ex-prime minister Imran Khan, left for London in November 2019 after the Lahore High Court granted him four-week permission to go abroad for his treatment.
