EU Chief, Top Leaders To Visit India Next Week; Trade, Defence Talks On Cards

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will visit India with the EU leadership for talks on trade, economic security, and defense cooperation next week.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will visit India next week along with the top leadership of the 27-nation bloc. This will be the EU chief's first official visit to India since she was re-elected President of the EU Commission last year. 

Talks on trade, economic security and defence cooperation are on the cards as the visit comes at a time of geopolitical turmoil in Europe caused by US President Donald Trump’s policies.

"On 27 and 28 February, President Ursula von der Leyen will visit New Delhi accompanied by the College of Commissioners to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Indian Government," said the European Commission in a statement.

The unprecedented visit, one of the first by the College of Commissioners early in the new mandate, highlights the strong momentum in EU-India relations. It follows President von der Leyen's announcement of a new strategic agenda with India to be presented this year at the EU-India Summit, the statement read further. 

During the visit, the top EU leadership and Indian government will hold a plenary session, chaired by President von der Leyen and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Leyen and Modi will also hold bilateral meetings while Members of the College will meet their counterparts individually. 

The second meeting of the Trade and Technology Council (TTC) will also be held during the visit with the EU being represented by Vice-President Virkkunen,* and Commissioners Maroš Šefčovič and Ekaterina Zaharieva. 

The meeting will aim to boost collaboration on the digital transition, clean and green technologies and trade and investment.

Collaboration on digital public infrastructure and its compatibility, as well as the resilience of key value chains and cooperation on global trade issues, will also be discussed during the meeting.
