New Delhi: At least ten people were wounded in a mass shooting in downtown Denver in the United States as basketball fans gathered to celebrate the Nuggets’ first NBA championship, reported Associated Press. According to the police, the officers took the suspect into custody who also had been shot.
The shooting happened about a mile from Ball Arena, where the Nuggets defeated the Miami Heat on Monday night.
The incident took place at about 12:30 am — about 3.5 hours after the game — and three of the injured were in critical condition, the Denver Police Department said in a statement. The suspect, a man, was one of the ten people who suffered injuries believed to be non-life-threatening.
“As far as what led up to this altercation that resulted in the shots being fired, that’s still under investigation at this time,” police spokesperson Doug Schepman said, according to AP.
“It did occur in the area where we had largest gathering of folks celebrating during the night,” Schepman added.
According to AP, the area was taped off and evidence markers were at the scene.
A small crowd was in the area at the time of the shooting, he said, but had “diminished quite a bit at that point.” He said the shooting was in an area where a lot of people might have come out of bars after the game.
Earlier, in another shooting incident in the US, at least 9 people were shot at on Friday night, in San Francisco’s Mission District neighbourhood in what the police have called a “targeted and isolated incident”. All the victims have survived the shooting which happened during a block party, CNN quoted San Francisco Police Department Officer Eve Laokwansathitaya as saying during a press conference.
“We can confirm there are 9 shooting victims — all are expected to survive their injuries,” the San Francisco Police Department said in a tweet.
This incident follows a shooting in California’s Sunnyvale city in which one person was shot dead and four others were injured. The incident took place when the suspect shot into a family's car, IANS reported. Interim Chief of Police Bill Vegas said the four injured persons, including three children, were taken to a hospital. The children did not suffer any life-threatening injuries, according to Chief Vegas.
