'CEO Monk' Of China Accused Of Fraud, Having Relationship With Multiple Women

China’s state-run Xinhua news agency labelled him the “CEO monk” due to his involvement in commercial ventures promoting kung fu performances and merchandise.

The renowned Shaolin Temple in China has confirmed that its abbot, Shi Yongxin, is under official investigation for alleged embezzlement and misappropriation of temple funds and project resources. The announcement was made on Sunday via the temple's official WeChat account, as per news agency AFP.

Shi Yongxin has long been a controversial figure. In 2015, China’s state-run Xinhua news agency labelled him the “CEO monk” due to his involvement in commercial ventures promoting kung fu performances and merchandise, a move that drew criticism for turning a sacred institution into a commercial enterprise.

As per the news report, the notice stated that multiple government departments are jointly conducting the investigation and that further findings would be made public in due course.

Shi Yongxin, who became abbot of the Shaolin Temple in 1999, is also accused of breaching Buddhist principles by maintaining relationships with multiple women over an extended period and fathering at least one child.

'CEO' Monk Faced Same Charges In The Past

Local Chinese media reports note that Shi, born Liu Yingcheng, had faced similar accusations in the past, including claims of fathering several children and embezzling funds. He was previously cleared of those charges in 2016, according to investigative reporting by Caixin Global.

The Shaolin Temple, located in Henan province, is globally recognised not only as a religious site but also as a hub of martial arts culture, especially kung fu. Its fame grew internationally following the 1982 film "The Shaolin Temple" starring Jet Li.

Earlier on Sunday, Chinese media debunked an online rumour claiming Shi had attempted to flee to the United States with several mistresses and 20 children, stating the claim was false and officially dismissed by authorities.
