'Bengal Holds Top Rank In Atrocities On Women': BJP Says Mamata Has 'No Moral Right' To Speak On Manipur

Attacking CM Mamata Banerjee, West Bengal BJP President Sukanta Majumdar alleged various incidents of atrocities on women that happened in West Bengal have not been reported in the media.

West Bengal BJP chief Sukanta Majumdar on Saturday hit out at Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee saying that she "does not have the moral right to point out fingers" as the state under her rule is number one with regards to atrocities on women. His remarks came as the saffron party earlier in the day alleged that two tribal women were stripped naked and tortured in West Bengal a few days ago while police remained a "mute spectator". While Opposition parties are targeting the BJP over the incident of two women being paraded naked in ethnic violence-hit Manipur, the party has been highlighting alleged cases of atrocities against women in states ruled by its rivals like the Congress and the Trinamool Congress.

"More severe cases have happened in West Bengal. After the 2021 (Bengal state) election, the incidents that happened in most places were not even reported. You will be shocked to know that a woman called our district president that her home was gheraoed. While the call was still on, goons of Trinamool Congress entered her house. 30 minutes later, she said she was raped," the West Bengal BJP President remarked.

"Various saddening incidents have happened in West Bengal that have not even been reported, several of them happened in Birbhum. We acknowledge that the (Manipur) incident is sad and we are ashamed that something like this happened in our country. However, Mamata Banerjee who is speaking about Manipur women does not have the moral right to point out fingers. West Bengal ranks highest in terms of atrocities on women," he added.

Earlier today, BJP's I-T department head Amit Malviya, who is also the party's co-incharge for the state, said that the incident took place in Malda on July 19, with a "frenzied mob baying for her blood". "The horror continues in West Bengal. Two tribal women were stripped naked, tortured and beaten mercilessly, while police remained a mute spectator in Pakua Hat area of Bamangola Police Station, Malda," Malviya said.

He also posted a video with blurred images of the crime.

"It had all the making of a tragedy that should have 'broken' Mamata Banerjee's heart and she, instead of merely outraging, could have acted, since she is also the home minister of Bengal," he alleged, attacking CM Mamata who has been strident in criticising the Manipur incident.

"Neither did she condemn the barbarity nor did she express pain and anguish because it would have exposed her own failing as a chief minister," Malviya said, alleging that she chose to do nothing in the case.

"But a day after, she shed copious tears and screamed blue murder because it was politically expedient," Malviya remarked in reaction to CM Mamata's attack on the BJP over the Manipur incident which sparked a nationwide outrage after a May 4 video of it went viral.

CM Mamata's Attack On PM Modi Over Manipur Video

On Friday, West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee launched a stinging attack on the BJP over the violence in Manipur, saying the saffron party's 'Beti Bachao' campaign "has now turned into Beti Jalao".

Addressing the TMC's Martyrs' Day in Kolkata, Mamata said, "You (BJP) gave 'Beti Bachao' slogan, where is your slogan now. Today Manipur is burning, the whole country is burning. In Bilkis Bano's case, the accused were released on bail. In the wrestler's case, (Brij Bhushan Singh) was also granted bail...The women of the country will throw you out of the country's politics in the coming elections."

"I want to ask PM Modi did the incident in Manipur not hurt you even a little? You point fingers at West Bengal but don't you have love for sisters and mothers? Till when daughters will be burnt, Dalits, minorities will be killed, people will be killed? We will not leave Manipur, North Eastern sisters are our sisters," Banerjee further said.
