When Salt Comes With A Price: Thoothukudi’s Salt Pan Workers Brave Heat And Hardship For Survival

In Thoothukudi's salt fields, over 50,000 workers, mostly women, face harsh conditions like extreme heat and salt-induced ailments.

As the sun rises over the salt fields of Thoothukudi, the glistening white pans conceal the punishing reality faced by over 50,000 salt workers, most of them women, who toil in some of the harshest working conditions in Tamil Nadu. Faced with a blistering heatwave, salt workers have been forced to shift their working hours to the early morning.

Thoothukudi Salt Pan Workers Reel Under Heatwave

Salt Pans Superintendent Santhana Raj told ANI, "Those who came to work at 2 in the morning leave at 7 AM harvesting salt earliest in the day... Working in the middle of the day will affect their eyes. Therefore, we work early in the morning..."

Though official working hours are from 6 AM to 1 PM, many salt pan owners now allow shifts to begin as early as 4 AM, ending by 11 AM. The change, while necessary, underscores the extreme vulnerability of workers who continue to labor without basic infrastructure—no toilets, no clean drinking water, and no shelter from the scorching sun.

Spanning nearly 25,000 acres from Vembar to Palayakayal, Thoothukudi's salt pans are one of India's most productive, yet the backbone of the industry—the workers—remain largely invisible. While men typically handle transport and machinery, women perform the most physically taxing tasks: raking, shoveling, and hauling crystallized salt under the relentless sun.

Salt Comes At A Cost

The heat is not their only enemy. Prolonged contact with salt has led to widespread skin allergies, burns, and open sores, with little to no medical assistance available on site, as per a report on The New Indian Express. Repeated appeals for water tanks or shaded rest areas have gone unanswered.

With elections approaching, salt pan workers have also started to demand for a increase an wage. For these workers, the election represents more than a political exercise—it is a rare window of leverage to demand dignity, fairness, and recognition. Their message is clear: the salt on every table comes at a cost, and it’s time that cost includes justice for those who harvest it.
