Supreme Court on Monday stayed the Delhi High Court decision to granting divorce to celebrity chef Kunal Kapur on grounds of cruelty by wife. The apex court referred the case to its mediation centre for exploring the possibility of out of court settlement.
In April, the high court had granted divorce to Kapur and held that his wife's behaviour towards him lacked empathy and dignity.
Kapur's wife moved the Supreme Court against the high court order and contended that the judgment was delivered by the High Court six months after it was reserved which is against the directions laid down by the Supreme Court.
Chef Kunal Kapur alleged that his wife used to threaten him and his family with false criminal complaints and calling the police. He further claimed that he faced abuse from her and was assaulted at the sets of the popular TV show Master Chef.
His wife on the other hand denied these allegations and said that she compromised her career to take care of her family. She further accuses her in-laws for taunting and humiliating her over having a job.
Kapur has a 12-year-old son with his wife. The high court after going through the chats between Kapur and his wife had noted in its order that Kapur was not being allowed to meet his son.
The Supreme Court bench headed by Justice Hrishikesh Roy and Justice SVN Bhatti after staying the divorce, sought the response from the celebrity chef.
The top court was informed that the husband and wife lived together and even took vacations after the alleged act of cruelty on Kapur by his wife. It was also argued that Kapur had admitted that his wife supported and helped him to become successful.
